The Importance of Recovery After Physical Activity

One of the greatest causes and contributors to pain is staying sedentary, however, that doesn't mean movement always feels good. We need to make sure we are taking the proper steps to give back to our bodies after physical activity so that we can make sure we feel our best!

When Do We Need to Prioritize Recovery?

As many people know, athletes spend a TON of time recovering. When people workout at the gym, they usually end their session with recovery, but what about other scenarios? MANY things require recovery that we truly never consider, such as gardening, cleaning, golfing, long walks/hiking, lifting things, and other day-to-day activities.

Honestly, pretty much everyone should dedicate time to prioritizing recovery, especially when there's been an increase in physical activity that day.

What Does Recovery Look Like?

Recovery can look like many things, here are a few ideas:

  • Taking an Epsom salt bath

  • Stretching/yoga

  • Using myofascial balls or foam roller

  • Drinking lots of water

  • Eating nutritious foods

  • Getting a massage

  • Applying heat or ice

  • Resting/sleeping

You’ve probably heard or have even done many of these recovery techniques before, but let’s discuss why they should become a part of your daily routine.

Why Is Recovery Important?

There are many reasons recovery is important, but here are a few key ones:

  • Reduces pain caused by inflammation and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)

  • Helps your body adapt and become more resilient

  • Maintains a strong immune system

  • Improves mental well-being

  • and much more!
